Surveillance video has been released surrounding the shocking South LA senior facility shooting where an employee opened fire on coworkers, sending three people to the hospital.
The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. on the 21st at the ‘Progressive Home for the Elderly’ located in the 7000 block of Denver Avenue in South LA. This facility is known to be a regional senior center associated with the century-old Progressive Community Missionary Baptist Church.
Suspect Identified in South LA Senior Facility Shooting
Investigative authorities identified the suspect as 60-year-old Daryl Arnett Barnes, a maintenance worker at the facility. According to police, Barnes is accused of opening fire on his boss and administrative staff inside an office within the facility.
Surveillance footage obtained by KTLA captures Barnes pulling out a firearm inside the facility and shooting toward staff members. Employees in the video can be seen screaming and evacuating as the gunfire starts, with some barely managing to escape the office.
The victims were identified as facility manager Janet Echols (77), secretary Yolanda Reyes, and manager Anwar Marcos. According to authorities and witnesses, all three sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital.
Police Response and Charges
The Los Angeles Police Department arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving the shooting report. Police stated they found Barnes in a room inside the building and arrested him without significant resistance.
All three victims are currently receiving treatment at hospitals. According to the latest known conditions, one is in critical condition while the other two remain in stable condition.
Rev. Jason Malvo, senior pastor of the Progressive Community Missionary Baptist Church, told KTLA immediately after the incident, “Our biggest prayer is finding ways to find peace with one another,” adding that “things don’t have to escalate to high emotions.”
Barnes has since been charged with three counts of attempted murder. Prosecutors believe the crime was carried out intentionally and with premeditation.
Barnes’ bail has been set at $4 million. If convicted, he faces up to life imprisonment.
