The King of Quarters? Why Subway is the Most Popular Fast Food Chain by the Numbers
Think McDonald’s is the undisputed ruler of the Golden Arches? Think again. According to the latest 2026 data from analytics firm SafeGraph, the sandwich giant Subway has officially secured its spot as the Most Popular Fast Food Chain in terms of sheer footprint. With approximately 24,500 locations nationwide, Subway nearly doubles McDonald’s count of 13,700, proving that size—and accessibility—really does matter in the fast-food wars.
The 49-State Sweep: Where Subway Dominates
Subway isn’t just winning; it’s a landslide. The chain holds the #1 spot for most locations in 49 out of 50 states. The lone holdout? Delaware, where McDonald’s narrowly leads with 37 locations to Subway’s 32.
In the Western U.S., including California, Nevada, and Washington, the hierarchy is clear:
-
Subway (The Leader)
-
McDonald’s (The Runner-up)
-
Jack in the Box (The Regional Powerhouse)
The secret to Subway’s ubiquity lies in its low barrier to entry. While a McDonald’s franchise requires a massive $1M to $3M investment due to standalone buildings and drive-thru tech, a Subway can be opened for as little as $150k to $500k. This flexibility allows Subway to tuck into strip malls and small corners where the “Big Mac” simply can’t fit.
Regional Rivalries: Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen, and Sonic
While McDonald’s takes the #2 spot in 40 states, local favorites are putting up a fight. In the Midwest (Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska), Pizza Hut claims the silver medal. Meanwhile, Dairy Queen reigns supreme as the second-most common sight in Minnesota and the Dakotas, and Sonic outpaces McDonald’s in Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Interestingly, the #3 spot varies wildly by geography. While the West loves Jack in the Box, the East Coast and Florida remain loyal to Burger King.
The Quality vs. Quantity Dilemma
Despite having the most locations, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing for the sandwich king. Subway saw a significant dip in 2018, closing over 1,100 stores to reach its lowest count since 2011. However, by leveraging lower overhead costs and a “healthier” fast-food image, Subway remains the Most Popular Fast Food Chain for entrepreneurs and hungry commuters alike in 2026.
Whether you’re craving a Footlong or a McDouble, one thing is certain: in the battle for American street corners, the sandwich is still winning.
