When a Wild Bear Library break-in occurred in California, it coincided perfectly with the 100th anniversary of the beloved children’s classic ‘Winnie-the-Pooh.’ A wild black bear decided to celebrate by wandering into a public library and helping itself to some sweet treats.
Wild Bear Enters Mammoth Lakes Library
According to the Mono County Library’s official social media updates on October 15 (local time), the incident took place at around 6:10 a.m. the previous day at the Mammoth Lakes branch. Entering approximately four hours before the library officially opened at 10 a.m., the bear headed straight for the staff snack storage area. The unexpected visitor enjoyed peanut butter, peaches in a cup, cookies, and even polished off a whole jar of honey.
Browsing Books Before Leaving
After satisfying its sweet tooth, the bear wandered around the new book display and reference desks before casually pushing open the door and exiting on its own. Fortunately, no books were damaged, and no bookshelves were knocked over. The library staff cleverly noted in their post that ‘the honey pot has not been returned as of the time of this posting.’
Library Officials Respond With Humor
Library Director Joseph Bob humorously remarked, ‘While we welcome enthusiastic patrons and understand the excitement of the 100th anniversary, we must remind everyone that snacks are not eligible for library checkout.’ Officials encouraged local residents to check out books to celebrate the milestone anniversary of A.A. Milne’s classic creation, which was first published on October 14, 1926, while firmly reminding the public that library visits are strictly for humans.
