History Making: Youn Yuh-jung Beef Season 2 Emmy Nomination Announced
Academy Award-winning legendary South Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung has officially added another monumental international milestone to her illustrious decades-long acting career. On Wednesday, the Television Academy officially announced the full list of nominees for the upcoming 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, revealing that the veteran star has successfully secured a highly coveted nod in a major acting category.
The historic Youn Yuh-jung Beef Season 2 Emmy nomination recognizes her exceptional artistic performance in the second season of Netflix’s highly acclaimed hit anthology series Beef (2023–).
Stealing the Spotlight as an Ultrarich Corporate Billionaire
In the official announcement, Youn was named a final nominee for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie. In the second season of the hit Netflix dark comedy-drama, Youn brilliantly brought to life the character of Chairman Park, a formidable South Korean billionaire who strategically acquires a prestigious luxury country club.
Within the high-stakes narrative of the wealthy elite, she showcases a dynamic presence alongside fellow iconic South Korean megastar Song Kang-ho, who portrays her husband, Dr. Park.
Youn originally made global cinematic history in 2021 by becoming the very first South Korean performer to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her poignant role in the independent film Minari (2020). If she manages to win at the upcoming television ceremony, she will follow in the historic footsteps of actor Lee Jung-jae, who became the first Korean actor to win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in 2022 for his performance in Squid Game.
A Dominant Sweep for the Star-Studded Netflix Anthology
The highly anticipated second season of Beef—which was masterfully directed by Korean American filmmaker Lee Sung-jin and partially filmed on location in South Korea—emerged as one of the biggest leaders during the Emmy nominations announcement. The anthology series picked up multiple major nods, including Best Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Writing.
The stellar international cast also enjoyed a massive clean sweep in the major performance categories. Star Carey Mulligan secured a nod for Lead Actress, Oscar Isaac was nominated for Lead Actor, and breakout Korean American actor Charles Melton earned a well-deserved nomination for Supporting Actor alongside Youn.
This latest critical sweep follows the historic dominance of Beef Season 1, which took the global media by storm in 2024. The debut season safely walked away with eight Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series, while lead stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong both won the coveted Lead Actor and Lead Actress prizes.
The final winners of the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will be officially revealed during a star-studded live broadcast ceremony held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14.
