Flying to Seoul? Korean Air Hikes Fuel Surcharges (Again)

Your Summer Trip to Seoul Just Got Pricier

If you were planning to cool off with some mul-naengmyeon in Seoul this summer, your wallet might feel the heat first. The cost of a Korea flight fuel surcharge has taken another leap, adding a significant burden to travelers heading home from the U.S.

Korean Air recently confirmed that fuel surcharges for U.S.-outbound flights have increased by $50 one-way and $100 round-trip. This marks the second hike in just a month and a half, following a similar increase at the end of March. For economy travelers, the surcharge alone now sits at approximately $355 one-way, while Prestige and First Class passengers are looking at roughly $455 per leg.

The Ripple Effect: Asiana and the Budget Alternatives

While Asiana Airlines has kept its rates steady since March, don’t hold your breath for a bargain. As the airline moves closer to its merger with Korean Air, experts expect Asiana to align its pricing soon, likely matching the current Korea flight fuel surcharge hike.

On the flip side, there is a small glimmer of hope for the budget-conscious. Air Premia is currently running a special promotion through May 17 and has notably frozen its fuel surcharges for the time being. Furthermore, despite the recent U.S. hike, it remains technically cheaper to book your flight starting from the U.S. than from Korea. Due to record-high surcharges in Korea—which reached a staggering Level 33—a round-trip ticket purchased in the U.S. is still about $380 cheaper than one issued in Seoul.

Why Are Prices Defying Gravity?

You might be wondering why prices are climbing when global jet fuel prices have recently shown a slight dip. According to IATA, jet fuel prices recently dropped to around $162.89 per barrel. However, the aviation industry is still struggling with costs that remain 80% higher than pre-war levels.

The financial strain is hitting airlines hard across the board. Total fuel expenditure for carriers surged over 56% in a single month recently, leading to drastic measures. We have even seen extreme casualties in the industry, such as the recent collapse of Spirit Airlines, which shuttered operations entirely due to insurmountable cost pressures.

Pro-Tip for Summer Travelers

If you’re eyeing a trip, now is the time to be strategic. Secure your tickets during promotional windows or keep a close watch on the mid-month announcements before pulling the trigger. The “early bird” gets the flight, but the “informed bird” saves the cash.
