Beyond quantity over quality, the academic sphere faces a rising tide of AI hallucinations where non-existent references are cited as factual sources. A prominent preprint analysis estimated that nearly 150,000 phantom references infiltrated academic literature within a single year. Academic experts and university research councils in South Korea note that human researchers are growing overwhelmed by the verification burden of filtering out baseless citations and superficial errors. Scholars urge the implementation of generative AI research ethics guidelines to restore research integrity and ensure human scientists maintain full editorial and cognitive leadership over their findings.
