Major theatrical productions featuring top South Korean musical stars such as Cho Seung-woo, Jeon Mi-do, and Ock Joo-hyun are preparing for their year-end premieres. Meanwhile, the Broadway hit ‘Hamilton’ is also heading to meet Korean audiences. The local Korean musical market, which had experienced a slump due to the sluggish performance of large-scale productions, is seeking a strong rebound with these high-profile year-end lineups.
According to the Korea Performing Arts Box Office Information System (KOPIS) on the 7th, ticket sales for musicals from January to September this year recorded 342.4 billion won, marking a 9.1% decrease compared to the same period last year. The decline deepened quarter by quarter, with drops of 5.7% in the first quarter, 6.7% in the second quarter, and 14.1% in the third quarter. The Management Center for Performing Arts analyzed the data, noting that large-scale theater musicals showed relative weakness compared to the previous year, and emphasized that future blockbuster hits will be crucial in attracting general audiences back to the theaters.
