Flawed Investigation and Months in Jail
Lips and her attorney proved through bank records that she was in Tennessee at the time of the crime, leading prosecutors to dismiss the charges and release her on Christmas Eve. The lawsuit was filed against the City of Fargo and the detective who applied for the arrest warrant. Lips’ legal team argued that police relied too heavily on a potential lead generated by AI facial recognition software without conducting sufficient verification.
