Bicycle Journey Across North America: Jo Jin-Woo Completes 6,200-Mile Trek to LA

โ€œThe greatest support came from strangersโ€™ kindness and encouragement.โ€

This is how Jo Jin-Woo (32), a cyclist who crossed North America and arrived in Los Angeles last week, described the journey.

A 7-Month Expedition Across the Continent

Jo Jin-Woo began his journey last year from northeastern Canada, cycling for five months to reach the west coastโ€”a 10,000-kilometer expedition relying solely on two wheels. He then turned south, riding through the United States for another two months before arriving in LA.

He now plans to set off again, aiming to cycle for another year to reach the southernmost point of South America.

โ€œI Was Drawn to the Road, Not to Attentionโ€

Wearing a fluorescent vest and helmet marked with the Taegeuk symbol, Jo explained: โ€œI admired the life of a traveler on the road more than a typical office workerโ€™s life. I simply made that dream happen. I donโ€™t seek attention or have a grand reason to explain. While many people have helped me along the way, Iโ€™ve never done this for money.โ€

Support From Fellow Cyclists and Strangers on His Bicycle Journey

Throughout his travels, Jo has met other cyclists and received assistance in many regions. Their encouragement and advice, he said, gave him strength on the tough roads.

Although still young, Joโ€™s journey was not impulsive. After graduating from university, he spent several years preparingโ€”building up finances, language skills, and researchโ€”before setting out.

A Community of Support Along the Way

Jo keeps in touch with other travelers via his YouTube (Jin’s Travel) and Instagram, and says that in cities with Koreatowns, locals sometimes recognize him, offering water or small donations with words of encouragement.

โ€œIโ€™m especially thankful to all the people I met while cycling through Canadaโ€™s vast wilderness who greeted and cheered me on. Thereโ€™s a shared understanding among those who love to be out on the road,โ€ Jo added.

Next Dream: Central Asia

Joโ€™s next goal reaches even farther: โ€œI want to cycle across Central Asia. Thatโ€™s the dream Iโ€™m focusing on now.โ€

His determination and focus on the next stage of his journey are evident.
