Busan medical tourism is surging as the city welcomed nearly 3 million international visitors between January and July, putting South Korea on track to shatter previous tourism records. According to data released by the Busan city government, total arrivals reached 2,927,674 during the first seven months of the yearโa striking 46.1% increase compared to the same period last year and well above the nationwide growth rate of 21.3%. Driven by strong momentum from Taiwan, China, Japan, and an emerging wave of travelers from the United States, local officials fully expect to surpass the 4 million annual visitor milestone.
K-Beauty Drives Surging Medical Tourism Spending
This unprecedented influx of international travelers has led to massive economic gains across South Korea, with total foreign credit card spending in Busan jumping 50.8% year-over-year to approximately $558 million USD (742.3 billion KRW). Most notably, medical tourism spending skyrocketed by 118.4%, accounting for 37% of all medical tourism expenditures outside of Seoul and making Busan the number one regional destination in the country. Districts like Busanjinโhome to bustling commercial hubs such as Seomyeon and Jeonpo-dong packed with dermatologists and plastic surgery clinicsโhave officially overtaken traditional hotspots like Haeundae in visitor spending, revitalizing local commercial real estate and driving department store sales up by over 125%.
