A coyote attack in Los Angeles’ Atwater Village left a 16-month-old toddler injured after a physical encounter with the wild animal.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced on the 17th that the baby was injured in an incident involving a coyote the previous day along the 3300 block of Glenhurst Avenue in Atwater Village, LA.

The toddler was immediately transported to a hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. Authorities have not disclosed specific details regarding the circumstances of the incident or the extent of the injuries.

On the evening of the incident, the CDFW captured and euthanized a coyote near the scene.

Currently, authorities are analyzing DNA samples collected from both the euthanized coyote and the baby to confirm whether it was the actual animal involved in the incident.

The CDFW advised residents to maintain a safe distance and slowly back away if they encounter a coyote, as well as to keep children and pets close by.

They also urged that if a coyote approaches, individuals should wave their arms to appear larger and make loud noises to chase it away.
