Hanwha Defense USA Secures $269M US Navy Contract
Hanwha Defense USA announced on the 29th (local time) that it has signed a contract with TOTE Services, a US Navy ship construction management firm (VCM), to build one Medium Landing Ship (LSM) valued at approximately $269 million (approx. 3575 billion won). The VCM acts on behalf of the US Navy to handle vessel construction contracts and project management.
Strategic Expansion into US Naval Shipbuilding
The LSM is an expeditionary combat ship introduced by the US Navy to conduct distributed operations in contested littoral zones such as the Indo-Pacific, tasked with transporting Marine Corps troops, equipment, and supplies. Based on a design by Dutch firm DAMEN, the vessel measures 100 meters in length, 16 meters in width, has a lightship displacement of about 2687 tons, and boasts a cruising range of 7400 kilometers. The US Navy plans to introduce a total of 35 LSMs.
Hanwha stated, “This contract win is deeply significant as it proves that Philly Shipyard is recognized not only for commercial vessels but also for building US Navy warships, establishing a strategic foundation to strengthen future US naval business opportunities.” US Senator Dave McCormick remarked, “Hanwha’s continued commitment to expanding its business in Philadelphia demonstrates that investments in American workers and industries can yield tangible results.”
Michael Coulter, President of Hanwha Defense USA, stated, “Since acquiring Philly Shipyard in 2024, Hanwha has made large-scale investments to build a foundation for vessel construction serving the US Navy and federal government. We will cooperate closely with TOTE Services to deliver the vessel on schedule and within budget.”
