Group ILLIT is sparking curiosity and fun among listeners by connecting lyrics from their previous works to weave a hidden storyline within their music.

"Arrested." This bold declaration by the group hides a plot twist in the love stories they have sung about so far. The 5th mini album ‘BREAK EVEN’ approaches ILLIT’s established musical narrative from a fresh perspective, depicting the realization that a relationship believed to be mutual was actually a unilateral misunderstanding, leading to a firm breakup declaration.

While ILLIT previously sang about the honest and bold love of the "younger generation," this album completely flips the narrative. It captures a range of emotions across four tracks, starting from the shock of realizing it was just a one-sided ‘some’ (situationship) to anger, emotional severance, and finally dusting oneself off to move forward. The genre and sound of each track vary in accordance with this emotional flow.

The connections to their past works are particularly striking. Motifs that once symbolized affection in previous songs now serve as evidence of self-delusion and regret. Fans who have followed ILLIT from their 1st to 4th mini albums will discover new meanings hidden within familiar lyrics, while newcomers will enjoy uncovering the stories embedded in each track.

The first track, ‘Super in Love,’ captures the moment when the protagonist realizes during a chat with friends that they have been harboring a one-sided crush. Memories from past releases are summoned one by one in this process. The complex emotions once compared to a messy closet in ‘Tick-Tack’ reappear as the lyrics, "Hundreds of clothes I can’t even wear." The cute jealousy of ‘jellyous’ and the heartfelt confession of ‘Cherish (My Love)’ are left behind as traces of a bygone romance.

In the second track, ‘More,’ shyness transforms into anger. The roller coaster that expressed the fluttering excitement of a first date in ‘Do the Dance’ returns as self-deprecating lyrics, "Drinking kimchi soup on a roller coaster ride." Even the ‘favorite iced tea’ that was treated as a special private signal in ‘IYKYK (If You Know You Know)’ turns into a questioning motif regarding the partner’s behavior.

Anger reaches its peak in the third track and title song, "Arrested." Set to sharp whistle sounds and impactful beats, ILLIT passes a guilty verdict on the partner’s ambiguous kindness. Pulling up memories of the past with lines like "That iced tea was my favorite flavor back then," they call out the confusing behavior through lyrics such as "Sweet and sour jelly, turns out it was smelly," "Why’d you send DMs," and "I told you, habitual kindness is a crime." Moments previously trusted as proof of love in ‘jellyous’ have now become reasons to end the relationship.

However, ILLIT’s story does not end in hurt and regret. In the final track, ‘Pop,’ they shake off the failed situationship and march forward once more. This attitude of accepting even painful experiences as stepping stones toward better love connects directly with the mindset expressed in ‘Lucky Girl Syndrome.’ Although the illusions about love have shattered, their belief in themselves remains unwavering.

The title track "Arrested" claimed global No. 1 and No. 3 in the US on Spotify’s ‘Top Song Debut’ chart for the tracking period of October 30 to November 1. It also topped Apple Music’s ‘Today’s Top 100: South Korea’ on November 3 and secured top spots on domestic major charts including Melon and Bugs.

Having sung about heart-fluttering love upon debut, ILLIT has dimensionalized their storytelling further with this album, broadening their emotional range and musical expression while keeping their signature vibrancy and positive attitude intact.

Attention is focused on how ‘ILLIT Core’β€”which continues to evolve while preserving its unique colorβ€”will transform next.
