For second and third-generation immigrant families, passing down cultural heritage can often feel like a fading challenge. Addressing this need, Korean American author David Jung, residing in Frisco, Texas, has recently published a bilingual keepsake journal titled Korean bilingual keepsake journal (‘Halmeoni, Tell Me Your Story’), designed to bridge generational gaps and preserve Korean roots.
The Inspiration Behind the Bilingual Journal
In an interview, Jung shared that the idea originated from a deeply personal place. With his parents living in California and his own children growing up in Texas, he wanted to create a meaningful way for his children to learn about their grandmother while giving his mother a special gift. Reflecting on the process, Jung realized that while he wanted to share stories about his mother, he first needed to understand her life history more deeply.
“I want to recommend this not just to first-generation immigrants like our parents, but to Koreans across all generations,” Jung said. The journal features both Korean and English side-by-side, ensuring that family members of all language proficiencies can participate in recording and sharing their family history.
105 Questions to Uncover Family History
The newly published journal contains 105 thoughtfully crafted questions that guide grandmothers through the journey of their lives. Prompts cover hometown memories, first meetings with grandfathers, prenatal dreams, the tradition of making kimchi, New Year’s morning memories, and lifelong wisdom for grandchildren. Additional sections provide space for Korean names, Chinese character meanings, lunar birthdays, zodiac signs, family trees, Korean family titles, and exclusive family recipes.
“Everything came from my personal experience and memories. I organized the content I hoped my mother would record and what I wanted my children to remember,” Jung explained. As a 1.5-generation Korean American born and raised in Los Angeles who served in the U.S. military and built a career in broadcasting—currently working closely with the famous TV host Dr. Phil’s production company—Jung emphasizes the growing importance of maintaining cultural identity amidst busy modern lives.
Looking Ahead
Following the release of the grandmother edition, Jung plans to introduce a grandfather edition next. The keepsake journal is currently available for purchase on Amazon, offering families a tangible way to safeguard their unique heritage for future generations.
