The identity of a male human remains found inside a rusted Lake Mead body barrel that emerged as water levels dropped in 2022 has been confirmed after approximately 40 years. The victim has been identified as Edward Ralburtian Jackson from Arkansas, and police believe he was shot and killed in the early 1980s before being placed inside a drum and discarded.

Investigation and Identification Methods

The Clark County Coroner’s Office announced that Jackson was estimated to be in his mid-to-late 50s at the time of his death. Genetic genealogy analysis utilizing bone samples, a facial reconstruction image, and the clothing he wore at the time were instrumental in confirming his identity.

Jackson was presumed to be from Hot Springs, Arkansas, and records showed a brief criminal history in Salt Lake City in the early 1980s related to grand arson and fraud conspiracy. Family members noted that he traveled frequently and had not been seen since the early 1980s, though no missing person report had ever been filed.

Potential Connections to Mob History

When the remains inside the drum were first discovered, speculations arose that the killing might be linked to Las Vegas’s historical mafia era, though police stated there is currently no direct evidence connecting the crime to organized crime, while not completely ruling out the possibility.

Jeff Schumacher, a research director at the Las Vegas Mob Museum, evaluated that the method of putting a body in a barrel and dumping it in a lake shares similarities with past organized crime killings. He stated that he would review museum archives to find clues that might help solve the case.

Lake Mead has experienced significant drops in water level due to long-term drought, excessive water usage, and rising temperatures, exposing areas previously submerged underwater. Several additional human remains have been discovered in the area since 2022, and police intend to continue the investigation until the perpetrator is identified.
