The premiere of the new MBC drama Liar K-drama showcased explosive acting synergy between lead actors Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin right from the start.

Airing on the 30th at 9:50 PM KST, the first episode of MBC’s new Friday-Saturday drama ‘Liar’ (planned by Lee Dae-yong, directed by Cho Young-min, written by Baek Jae-young, produced by Zip Cinema and Kakao Entertainment) recorded a peak metropolitan rating of 4.8% according to Nielsen Korea.

The premiere unspooled a well-crafted narrative covering the first meeting of protagonists Min Joon-ho (played by Yoo Yeon-seok) and Kang Ji-sun (played by Seo Hyun-jin), their seemingly perfect first date, and the shocking incident that followed with completely conflicting accounts.

Their connection began with an unexpected misunderstanding. Kang Ji-sun, an elementary school librarian, mistook Min Joon-ho for an author visiting the school to give a lecture to the students. Thrust before the children, Min Joon-ho shared a heartwarming talk about hearts tailored to his actual profession as a thoracic surgeon, leaving a strong first impression on each other.

Later, Kang Ji-sun discovered that Min Joon-ho was the father of Min Hyun-soo (played by Kang Ji-yong), a student she particularly looked after. Reconnecting over his son, Min Joon-ho mustered the courage to ask Kang Ji-sun out on a date, but she initially declined due to their teacher-parent relationship. However, as coincidence and fate intertwined, they reunited, and Kang Ji-sunโ€”already drawn to himโ€”accepted, setting up a first date filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness.

Their first date was nothing short of perfection. Kang Ji-sun opened up to Min Joon-ho’s unexpected charm, which appeared seasoned yet slightly clumsy at times, while Min Joon-ho was completely captivated by Kang Ji-sun as they formed a deep bond across various topics.

After the date, Min Joon-ho walked Kang Ji-sun home. As a torrential downpour began to pour, Kang Ji-sun invited him inside to wait out the rain. With only 40 minutes left before a taxi arrived, the two spent time alone in Kang Ji-sun’s home.

The next morning, Min Joon-ho arrived at work with a happy expression fueled by the previous night’s excitement. However, Kang Ji-sun’s state upon waking up was entirely different. After collapsing and sobbing for a long time, she received a message and porridge sent by Min Joon-ho, but she chose to skip work and visit her older sister, Kang Ji-sun’s sister Kang Ji-eun (played by Kim Ji-hyun).

Subsequently, Kang Ji-sun reported Min Joon-ho to the police for sexual assault. Shivering, she poured out every detail of her recollection of that day to the authorities. Consequently, the police tracked down Min Joon-ho and urgently arrested him while he was in the middle of medical consultations at the hospital.

From this point onward, Min Joon-ho and Kang Ji-sun’s diametrically opposed claims regarding a single memory began to clash fiercely. Min Joon-ho appealed his innocence, crying out that it was never forced, whereas Kang Ji-sun maintained it was explicitly non-consensual. To heighten the truth-seeking battle, both even claimed that the other had initiated the kiss first.

Particularly, following Min Joon-ho’s cryptic remark, “Did you know it would turn out like this? I knew it from the very first time I saw you,” a thrilling ending featuring their kiss was broadcast, explosively raising viewers’ curiosity about the exact truth of that night and which of the two is the real ‘liar’.

In this way, the premiere of ‘Liar’ portrayed a fascinating and unconventional premise and storyโ€”where one of the two main characters is lyingโ€”through unpredictable developments. Furthermore, Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin heightened viewer immersion by delivering sharp performances capturing the duality of ‘warmth and coldness’ and ‘tenderness and sensitivity’, as well as the rapidly shifting emotional lines of their characters.
