The new US passport is set to feature a refreshed design, while U.S. citizens can also expect the ability to apply for new passports online starting next year.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced during a federal AI-based website unveiling event last month that the online application feature for new passports will roll out next year. While online services are currently limited primarily to specific passport renewals, functionality will soon expand to include brand-new applications.

Upcoming US Passport Redesign Details

Secretary Rubio also unveiled the upcoming US passport design slated for introduction in 2028. The most prominent visual change features the American eagle. While previously restricted to the cover, the new passport incorporates continuous eagle imagery throughout the interior pages.

The passport’s interior will also highlight scenes symbolizing 250 years of American history. Planned illustrations include the Battle of Lexington, westward expansion, the Wright brothers’ first flight, the U.S. Marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima, and the return of the recent Artemis space mission.

Cover Changes and Timeline

The cover design is undergoing a significant update as well. The Great Seal of the United States will appear larger, and the phrase ‘United States of America’ will move to the top of the cover. The traditional ‘PASSPORT’ text will remain.

However, the rollout timeline for the online application feature and the physical passport redesign differs. Online applications are scheduled to launch next year, whereas the redesigned passports will be issued starting in 2028.
