New York City has announced the second phase of expansion for NYC 2-K program, a free childcare and education initiative designed for two-year-old children.

On the 19th, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul revealed plans at a Bronx trampoline park to add 10,000 new 2-K seats starting in the fall of 2027. This expansion will bring the total capacity to over 12,000 seats.

The program will operate in 22 out of the city’s 32 school districts, adding 17 new districts to the existing five. With the inclusion of all Bronx districts and the entirety of Staten Island, the program will now span all five boroughs. Existing districts that already offer 2-K will also see an increase in capacity.

The initial 2-K enrollment period launched this past fall received over 5,700 applications for just 2,000 seats. The city administration aims to meet this high demand, expand supply, and alleviate the financial burden of child-rearing for families.

Most school districts design the 2-K program to operate from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM for 260 days a year. This structure is intended to support dual-income families by minimizing childcare gaps caused by school holidays and breaks.

This major expansion is supported by a $1.2 billion investment from the state government. Ultimately, the city aims to build a universal childcare system that serves children from six weeks to five years of age.
