Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that starting next year, individuals in the US will be able to submit their online passport application for the first time.
Rubio revealed this update during the launch event for the federal government’s new portal, ‘America.gov,’ held on the 29th of last month. America.gov is an integrated portal designed to utilize AI and other technologies to provide federal information and services in one centralized location.
Currently, online passport services are limited to the renewal of adult passports that meet specific requirements. First-time applicants must visit acceptance facilities such as post offices, libraries, or local government offices in person. Additionally, applicants will be able to take passport photos using a smartphone and submit them without needing separate physical prints.
However, minors under the age of 16 will still be required to apply for passports in person. The State Department told the New York Times that children’s passport applications require additional safeguards, such as identity verification and guardian consent.
A new passport design was also unveiled at the event. Scheduled for introduction in 2028, the new passport is named ‘Flight of the Eagle.’ When flipping rapidly through the inner pages, an animation effect of an eagle flapping its wings appears.
