Park Joon-myun, a veteran actress who has spent 30 years in the industry, describes herself as a ‘subsistence actor’ who gives her absolute best whenever a role is given. Starting her career on stage after passing her first high school theater audition, she has seamlessly transitioned across musicals, films, and television dramas while even releasing her own self-composed album. Recently, she expanded her career into YouTube content and the kimchi business. Building on this unwavering work ethic, she was recently approached by a publisher to release a cookbook titled Park Joon-myun’s Hesitant Recipe. The book features about 60 easy-to-make home recipes alongside everyday stories tied to cooking.
Reflecting on her journey, she shares how she finds comfort in stepping away from busy schedules to nourish herself with home-cooked meals. What started as a simple lifestyle on YouTube blossomed into a published book, thanks to the enthusiastic support of readers and viewers who resonate with her honest and approachable cooking style.
From YouTube to Cookbook: Embracing Imperfect Cooking
Although she is not a professional chef, Park’s instinct for seasoning and flavor shines through her cooking videos. Despite occasionally struggling with knife skills or flipping egg rolls, her relatable and unpretentious approach has endeared her to fans. She humorously refers to her active comment section as a group of ‘mothers-in-law’ giving friendly cooking advice, a form of interaction she genuinely enjoys.
For Park, cooking represents her soul and a vital way to care for herself. Avoiding the trap of eating poorly just to fill her stomach, she values the simple act of preparing a satisfying meal after a long day of stress.
Expanding Horizons: The Journey into Kimchi Business and Music
Among the recipes in her book, green onion kimchi holds a special place. Growing up in a large family that prepared hundreds of heads of cabbage for kimchi annually, the foundational skills naturally rubbed off on her. After gaining the nickname ‘Yangnyeom Park’ (Seasoning Park) on a variety show, public interest led her naturally into the kimchi business, supported by words of encouragement from senior actress Kim Hye-soo.
Beyond acting, cooking, and business, Park has also ventured into music, releasing a full album of self-composed tracks in 2014 following encouragement from musician Kang San-ae. True to her philosophy, she does not overanalyze or fear new challenges; instead, she embraces opportunities with sincerity and sees them through without causing harm to others.
Looking Forward as a 30-Year Veteran Actress
As she looks to the future, Park holds no obsession with playing only leading roles. Instead, she hopes to avoid being boxed into a single warm and cozy image, expressing a strong desire to tackle chilling villainous roles as well. Ultimately, acting remains her primary anchor, with writing, music, and business serving as natural extensions of her vibrant career as she continues to give her best wherever she is needed.
