Prosecutors in South Korea ISIS terror plot cases have demanded a prison sentence of one to two years for an 18-year-old college student who plotted an explosive attack after pledging allegiance to the extremist group ISIS. According to the Cheongju District Court, the defendant faced charges under the Counter-Terrorism Act for activities dating back to his high school years between November 2024 and February 2025. Investigators stated that he accessed encrypted online propaganda sites thousands of times, viewed execution videos, and attempted to join foreign terrorist fighters.
Defense Claims and Court Testimony
During the final hearing, defense attorneys argued that the defendant’s plans lacked specific details and that his risk level was low. His lawyer emphasized that after entering college, he distanced himself from radical ideologies, earned excellent grades, and lived like any ordinary student. Meanwhile, the defendant’s father expressed shock that his son fell into extremism despite their Christian background, and the student himself expressed deep remorse in his final statement, asking for leniency and promising to become a productive member of society. The sentencing is scheduled for September 20.
