How a South Korean student shade app Beat the Heatwaves
A 24-year-old Seoul National University student who developed a viral shade-finding app is set to appear on tvN’s popular talk show ‘You Quiz on the Block.’ Recently discharged from the military, Yoo Min-jun came up with the idea for the ‘Geunreullo’ (Meaning ‘Into the Shade’) app during his grueling daily commute under scorching summer temperatures reaching nearly 40°C (104°F). By leveraging artificial intelligence, he completed the entire application in just two weeks. The free app quickly gained massive traction, attracting approximately 90,000 users and even catching the attention of the Seoul metropolitan government.
A History of Creative Coding and Tech Innovation
Yoo’s knack for technology showed early signs when he began dismantling computers as a child, eventually building his own apps by middle school. His impressive portfolio includes a variety of practical and inventive projects, such as a rock identification app, an anti-drowsiness alarm, a quick-nap guide, a food delivery app blocker, and even a child abuse prevention device. His continuous stream of innovative ideas highlights his unique vision for utilizing technology to enhance public safety and daily life.
