All That Glitters: The Shocking Truth Inside the Trump Mobile T1 Phone
When Donald Trump’s family business, ‘Trump Mobile,’ launched its highly anticipated smartphone last month, it leaned heavily on patriotic marketing, boasting an “Assembled in America” tag. Tech enthusiasts and political followers alike were eager to see what kind of homegrown innovation the $499 device would bring to the table. However, a comprehensive independent teardown has officially pulled back the glittering curtain, revealing that the Trump Mobile T1 Phone is essentially a two-year-old, mid-range Chinese smartphone covered in a thin layer of gold paint.

iFixit Teardown Uncovers a Familiar Taiwanese Blueprint
The consumer repair experts at iFixit decided to put the “Assembled in America” claim to the test at their office in San Luis Obispo, California. Inviting a news crew from NBC, the team performed computed tomography (CT) scans and a full physical disassembly of the device.
The results were staggering: the internal architecture of the Trump Mobile T1 Phone is a near-exact mirror image of the HTC U24 Pro, a smartphone originally released back in June 2024. While HTC is a Taiwanese company, the U24 Pro is actually an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) product manufactured by Yuanchang Electronics in Guangdong, China.
To prove just how identical the two devices are, iFixit engineers successfully extracted the motherboard from an HTC U24 Pro and swapped it directly into the T1 chassis. The Frankenstein experiment worked perfectly, with the phone booting up and functioning flawlessly. From the screw placements to the tamper-evident security stickers, the core components are completely interchangeable.
Spot the Difference: Slower Charging for More Cash?
If the logic boards, 1080×2436 Pentile OLED displays, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 (SM7550) processors are identical, what exactly are buyers getting for their $499? The teardown highlighted only a handful of superficial and minor hardware tweaks differentiating the Trump Mobile T1 Phone from its older clone:
-
The Shell: A flashy, gold-painted exterior with slightly altered speaker grille patterns and an elongated flex cable for the camera flash.
-
The Battery: The T1 features a 5,000mAh battery supplied by Nurics Manufacturing in the Philippines, compared to the HTC’s 4,600mAh Chinese battery.
-
The Charging Speed: Ironically, the T1’s battery tweak cut its charging speed in half. It maxes out at a sluggish 30W, whereas the original HTC U24 Pro charges at a blazing 60W.
The Gray Area of “Assembled in America”
Following the explosive live teardown, iFixit bluntly summarized the device as being “designed in China, manufactured in China, with the vast majority of parts originating from China.”
While the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) maintains incredibly strict and clear guidelines regarding what can legally be labeled “Made in USA,” the regulatory frameworks surrounding the phrase “Assembled in America” remain notoriously gray and easy to exploit. The T1 finally hit the market in mid-May after enduring a series of lengthy production delays. However, early adopters are quickly finding out that they paid a steep premium for clever political branding rather than authentic American manufacturing.
