The Brutal Odds of Getting a Chick-fil-A Franchise
Becoming a Chick-fil-A franchise operator is famously known as one of the hardest business opportunities in the United States, boasting an acceptance rate of just 0.2%. According to a recent report by Fox 5 News featuring Illinois operator Julian Good on the ‘Founder Talk’ podcast, the fast-food giant maintains a remarkably low initial franchise fee of just $10,000โa price tag that has remained unchanged for the past 50 years. However, this low barrier to entry triggers staggering competition, with roughly 100,000 people applying every year and only about 200 candidates selected annually.
While previous restaurant experience is not strictly mandatoryโwith over 25% of new operators having no prior background with the companyโapplicants without a corporate or in-store history often wait three to five years for a chance to run a location. The company actively seeks dedicated leaders who are willing to commit their time and full attention to daily operations, drawing candidates from diverse professional fields such as manufacturing, education, healthcare, law enforcement, and retail.
A Unique Business Model and No Equity
Unlike standard fast-food chains where owners build significant equity, invest large amounts of capital, and can eventually sell or pass down their business, the Chick-fil-A franchise model operates quite differently. The corporation retains ownership of the real estate, the building, and the equipment. Consequently, operators do not build traditional business assets or equity. Julian Good explained that when an operator retires, they cannot sell the business or hand it down to their children; the restaurant simply returns to corporate management.
The Famous Sunday Closure Tradition
Another defining element of the Chick-fil-A franchise network is that every single restaurant remains closed on Sundays. Good emphasized that this Sunday closure tradition is still a vital part of the company culture, designed to give employees a chance to rest, worship, and spend quality time with their local communities.
