Transforming an Architectural Icon
The Google Chicago Thompson Center project is making steady progress as the city’s historic downtown landmark undergoes a massive multi-million dollar renovation to become the tech giant’s new Midwest headquarters. Once facing the threat of demolition, the 17-story architectural marvel designed by Helmut Jahn is being preserved with its signature features intact, including the soaring atrium and the iconic first-floor black-and-white marble mosaic. Thousands of Google employees will eventually occupy the space, which will also feature public-access areas to revitalize the local downtown economy.
Modern Design and Public Spaces
According to the updated architectural plans, the revitalization of the Google Chicago Thompson Center introduces a large courtyard with grand staircases, terraced seating, and vibrant retail and dining options. Designed to host seasonal events, the open-concept urban hub aims to serve as a vibrant gathering place for both workers and visitors. Sustainability and safety upgrades include replacing the original glass exterior with triple-paned windows to maximize natural light, boost energy efficiency, and minimize bird collisions. Additionally, Los Angeles installation artist Sanford Biggers has been commissioned to create a 30-foot sculpture titled ‘Vector’ to replace the former ‘Monument with Standing Beast’ artwork.
Revitalizing Downtown Chicago
Originally opened in 1985 as the State of Illinois Center, the building was purchased by Chicago developers Prime and Capri Interests for $105 million from the state in 2022, with Google slated to acquire the property upon completion. Originally targeted for a 2026 completion, the massive 1.2 million-square-foot renovation is now slated to open its doors by 2028. The arrival of Google is widely anticipated to inject fresh energy and foot traffic into downtown Chicago following post-pandemic commercial vacancies.
