The AI startup Anthropic AI infrastructure strategy involves massive spending commitments, with the company planning to allocate at least $518 billion (approximately 702 trillion won) for cloud, computing, and infrastructure usage over the next 10 years. Reports indicate that about 80% of these agreements are non-cancellable or require payment regardless of actual usage.
Massive Financial Commitments
According to an IPO prospectus recently filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Anthropicβs long-term purchase obligations rival the scale of OpenAIβs $500 billion ‘Stargate’ project. The company has secured significant contracts with major tech firms, including $111.1 billion with Google, $110 billion with Amazon, and $31.4 billion with Microsoft. These deals are largely structured as take-or-pay agreements, meaning Anthropic is liable for the full amount even if their actual infrastructure usage falls short.
Risks of AI Market Volatility
These aggressive long-term contracts pose a significant financial risk should the AI market cool down or ‘bubble’ conditions emerge. If demand for advanced computing resources declines, Anthropic remains contractually obligated to pay for its massive infrastructure capacity. Additionally, the company noted a unique risk: its key infrastructure providersβGoogle, Amazon, and Microsoftβare also its primary competitors in the AI model development space. Anthropic warned investors that the conflicting interests of these partners could potentially hinder its future business strategy and competitive edge.
