Hyundai Translead, headquartered in San Diego, is significantly expanding its investment scale and hiring plans for a new production facility in Illinois.
On October 22, Hyundai Translead announced that it will increase its planned investment in the Will County, Illinois manufacturing facility from over $450 million to $600 million, while expanding full-time employment from 2,500 to 3,750 workers. The company initially announced plans in March to establish two advanced manufacturing facilities in Will County. This expansion plan introduces a three-shift operation at the production facility, adding $150 million in investment and 1,250 jobs beyond the original plan.
Hyundai Translead stated that interest from customers in the Illinois operations is growing, and expects this expansion to provide additional production capacity as the transportation industry recovers.
CEO Sean Kenney stated, "This expanded investment reflects our confidence in Illinois, the local workforce, and the long-term growth of our U.S. business," adding, "We will create more jobs and strengthen our manufacturing capabilities and customer service abilities."
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker noted that "3,750 new jobs will bring a major change to the region," and stated that this investment will also contribute to manufacturing growth in Illinois.
The company plans to collaborate with state and local governments, local communities, and economic development agencies to drive manufacturing growth and workforce development in Will County. Additionally, the new facility will be operated to support existing core businesses while being utilized for future product production and business expansion.
Wholly owned by Hyundai Motor Company, Hyundai Translead manufactures dry and refrigerated van trailers, flatbed trailers, and truck bodies in North America. It is also responsible for the exclusive North American sales of Hyundai Motor’s hydrogen fuel cell truck, the Xcient.
