Actor Lee Sung-min brings his signature heavy charisma and years of depth to the upcoming JTBC weekend drama ‘The Pearl of the Gods’.

Lee Sung-min Takes on the Role of Veteran Commander Choi Gu

Set to premiere this December, ‘The Pearl of the Gods’ (written by Jung Hyun-min, directed by Jung Dae-yun) is set in 1258 during the Goryeo Dynasty, amid a grueling 30-year war with the Mongol Empire. The story follows the heroic struggle of an escort team tasked with finding the Avalokiteshvara Pearl—a sacred national treasure—and a princess attempting to save them.

Lee Sung-min stars as Choi Gu, the commander of the Yabyeolcho, Goryeo’s elite special forces unit. As a battle-hardened veteran who has survived countless fierce battlefields, Choi Gu is selected to lead the perilous mission to escort the sacred pearl, bringing him into contact with rookie commander Baek Gyeol, played by Ahn Bo-hyun. Viewers are eager to see how the cool-headed and experienced Choi Gu will navigate crises.

Stills Reveal the Intense Aura of a Veteran Soldier

Newly released stills capture the intense presence of Choi Gu, who has guarded the frontlines for decades. Scars on his face, a firmly closed mouth, and a sharp gaze reveal the heavy weight of a seasoned warrior. Props like arrows and swords further hint at a life defined by endless warfare, conveying the harsh journey he has endured.

Choi Gu’s reputation is built on hard-earned trust; rookie soldiers longed to serve under him because of the comforting belief that staying close to Choi Gu meant survival. However, years of brutal conflict have also left him acutely aware of the cold, harsh realities of war.

A Highly Anticipated Reunion with Director Jung Dae-yun

This project marks a notable reunion between Lee Sung-min and director Jung Dae-yun, who previously collaborated on the hit series ‘Reborn Rich’. Their previous synergy raises expectations for what kind of compelling results they will deliver in a historical setting.

‘The Pearl of the Gods’ combines the stylish direction of Jung Dae-yun with the intricate writing of Jung Hyun-min, known for ‘Jeong Do-jeon’, ‘The Nokdu Flower’, and ‘Assembly’. With a star-studded cast including Ahn Bo-hyun, Lee Sung-min, Lee Soo-hyun, Ha Yoon-kyung, and Yoon Kyun-sang, the drama promises to be a well-made historical epic set against the backdrop of Goryeo-era warfare.
