Running the NYC Marathon topless woman, Lauren Spiezio, became a viral topic after completing the 42.195km course without a shirt at the 2026 New York City Marathon held on November 2.
Residing in New Jersey, the 33-year-old chose to run without a top to share her personal experience with breast cancer and to connect with other patients facing difficulties during their treatment process.
Spiezio was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at the age of 31. At the time, two doctors dismissed her concerns because she was ‘too young,’ delaying her actual diagnosis.
Following her diagnosis, the treatment process she had to endure was rigorous, including a total of 16 chemotherapy sessions and six rounds of immunotherapy. She also underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, as well as a fallopian tube removal due to cancer-related genetic mutations.
During her battle with cancer, Spiezio made completing the New York Marathon a personal goal. The idea of running topless came to her as her perspective on the scars left on her chest after the mastectomy began to change.
In an interview with the New York Post, she shared that there were moments when her confidence plummeted due to the chest scars left by the mastectomy. She realized she disliked how she viewed those scars negatively when they were actually evidence of her strength, leading to her decision to run without a top.
The purpose of her topless marathon challenge was to give courage to others who share her experiences. Spiezio stated that she wanted to help women and men currently undergoing treatment find hope, overcome challenges, and feel that they are not alone. She emphasized that this challenge was a movement for positive body image, advocacy, and women’s agency.
People who heard Spiezio’s story expressed touching reactions, while other netizens voiced opposing views, calling her an attention-seeker and a feminist, or noting that many people do not wish to see women’s bare bodies.
