The Remarried Empress has quickly captured the top spot on domestic charts just one day after its premiere, drawing immense buzz over everything from Ju Ji-hoon’s skin tone to Lee Jong-suk’s custom wardrobe.
Disney+ original series The Remarried Empress released episodes 1 to 4 on the 3rd, a day ahead of its original schedule. By the 4th, it claimed the No. 1 spot on ‘Today’s Top 10 in Korea,’ signaling a strong early box office start despite mixed reactions surrounding its live-action adaptation.
The Remarried Empress is a fantasy romance where Navier, empress of the Eastern Empire, is divorced by Emperor Sovieshuβwho has fallen for the runaway slave Rashta. Instead of accepting it, Navier demands approval for a remarriage with Prince Heinrey of the Western Kingdom.
While the fantasy setting is unfamiliar, the conflicts between the characters feel all too human. The story weaves together the collapse of a marriage due to a husband’s betrayal, a new romance, and the driving desire for upward social mobility. Once Navier demands immediate approval for her remarriage after being notified of her divorce, the power dynamic with Sovieshu flips completely.
Shin Min-a plays Empress Navier, while Ju Ji-hoon takes on the role of Emperor Sovieshu. Lee Jong-suk appears as Prince Heinrey, and Lee Se-young stars as Rashta, the woman who captures the emperor’s heart.
Beyond the romance between Navier and Heinrey, the shifting relationship between Sovieshu and Rashta serves as a key viewing point. How the four actors navigate their tangled emotions is drawing intense interest from both original web novel fans and new viewers alike.
Expanding from a web novel to a webtoon, the original IP recorded a staggering 2.97 billion cumulative global views. With such massive recognition came sky-high expectations for the live-action adaptation. Fans eagerly watched to see how characters and the imperial court familiar to readers would be translated into real-life actors, costumes, and actual sets.
Following its release, viewers were divided on finer details. Some reactions pointed out the differences between Ju Ji-hoon’s skin tone as Emperor Sovieshu and the original character’s illustrated appearance.
Lee Jong-suk’s transformation into Heinrey also drew major attention. He reportedly ordered his own custom costumes to stay as faithful to the original character as possible.
Reactions to the lavish dresses and European location shoots were equally mixed. While some welcomed the fresh sight of Korean actors portraying a Western-style imperial court, others found it unfamiliar. Opinions also split on how accurately the costumes and backgrounds captured the mood of the original work.
Meanwhile, Jung Young-joo’s vocal projection and acting performance as Albani, Rashta’s adoptive mother, earned rave reviews, with fans calling her the absolute best fit for the ‘romance fantasy’ genre.
Despite pre-release adaptation controversies, The Remarried Empress has firmly planted itself at the center of domestic netizen discussions, launching straight to the top of the charts.
As interest in the actors’ appearances and outfits translates into the show’s opening performance, all eyes are on how Navier’s journey of remarriage will unfold next.
