Three years after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled affirmative action unconstitutional in college admissions, the proportion of Harvard Asian American students in the freshman class has surged to 43%.

Record-Breaking Demographics at Harvard

According to admissions data released by Harvard University, Asian American students accounted for 43% of this year’s incoming class. This represents a 2-percentage-point increase from 41% the previous year.

Bloomberg reported that this is the highest proportion of Asian American freshmen in the past decade, having roughly doubled compared to five years ago.

Conversely, the proportion of freshmen identifying as African American or Black dropped from 11.5% last year to 9.3% this year. This marked a 2.2-percentage-point decline in a single year, continuing a downward trend for the third consecutive year.

Impact of the Supreme Court Affirmative Action Ruling

The shift in Harvard’s racial demographics follows the Supreme Court’s landmark June 2023 ruling against race-conscious admissions.

For decades, American universities practiced affirmative action to enhance campus diversity by considering an applicant’s race during the admissions review process. However, critics argued that these policies unfairly favored Black and Hispanic applicants while disadvantaging white and Asian American candidates.

Lawsuits challenging the practice named Harvard University and the University of North Carolina as defendants. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled that both universities’ admissions programs violated the equal protection clause of the Constitution.

Following the ruling, Harvard witnessed an increase in Asian American freshman enrollment alongside a decrease in Black student enrollment, leading analysts to suggest that previous policies may have influenced admission rates based on race.

Changes in Statistical Methodology

Nevertheless, experts caution that it remains unclear whether these demographic shifts are entirely the result of the Supreme Court ruling.

Harvard University altered its methodology for calculating racial proportions starting with the 2024 entering class, making direct comparisons with historical statistics challenging.

Some analysts note that shifts in racial percentages alone are insufficient to definitively measure the exact impact previous race-conscious policies had on specific groups.

Meanwhile, international students accounted for 15% of this year’s incoming freshman class, remaining steady compared to the previous year. Total undergraduate applications surpassed 55,000, reflecting a 15% increase from the prior year.
